This intensive integrated program is designed for students who wish to study the Middle East: religion, politics, societies, history, and cultures. The program is offered in conjunction with the Department of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Students have the opportunity to study with some of the leading scholars in the field, while living in Jerusalem, one of the most important and dynamic cities of the Middle East. Graduates of the program have assumed positions in government service, relevant NGOs and journalism and other areas.
Courses from the M.A. program are also open to visiting graduate students on a one year or semester basis.
Course of Study
The M.A. program consists of 36 credits over three consecutive semesters, including one required seminar in Historiography and electives. Courses are available in the modern period as well as in a range of disciplines in Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies, including medieval and early modern history, religion, anthropology, literature, the arts and Arabic language. Students who demonstrate an adequate knowledge of Arabic are required to deepen and expand their language skills by studying modern and classical texts of an ideological, historical, social, religious, or literary nature, in tutorials or through courses offered in the Faculty of Humanities. Students who demonstrate satisfactory knowledge of Arabic and Hebrew may take courses in other Middle Eastern and Islamic languages, such as Modern Turkish, Ottoman Turkish, Persian, Urdu, and Swahili, or in relevant European languages, such as French or German.
Language Requirements:
Literary Arabic - Students will study Literary Arabic (10 weekly hours) during the three semesters of their study according to their arabic level.
All new students must take an Arabic placement exam prior to the start of their studies to determine the appropriate level to start their Arabic language studies. The Arabic placement exam will take place on Monday, October 7, 2013 at 9:00a.m-13:00p.m.
Students may also deepen and expand their language skills by studying modern and classical texts of an ideological, historical, social, religious, or literary nature through courses offered in the Faculty of Humanities.
Advanced students who demonstrate an adequate knowledge of Arabic are expected to deepen and expand their language skills by studying modern and classical texts of an ideological, historical, social, religious, or literary nature in tutorials or through courses offered in the Faculty of Humanities.
All students must complete the exemption exam (p'tor) in Literary Arabic in order to graduate.
Admission Requirements
Qualified students with a bachelor's degree from accredited institutions of higher education are eligible for admission to the program. Admission is competitive and is based on transcripts and letters of recommendation. Students must have
Knowledge of English: Candidates who did not previously study at an educational institution where the language of instruction is English must submit official TOEFL scores or IELTS. The minimum TOEFL score required is 573 on the paper-based test, 230 on the computer-based test or 89 on the Internet-based test. The minimum IELTS score required is 7. Only applicants who have completed a full course of study at an institution where the language of instruction is English, or who completed a degree program in English Language and/or Literatureare, are exempt from the study of English.
